American Akita

Contrary to what its name suggests, the American Akita is originally from northern Japan. However, the breed was developed on American territory and is therefore different from the Japanese Akita Inu in a few ways.

The American Akita is a Spitz type breed. It was officially recognized by the FCI (Fédération cynologique internationale) in 2006. The American Inu is a large dog with fluffy hair. Males can measure between 66 and 71 cm (around 26 to 28 in) at the withers for males and females can measure between 61 and 66 cm (around 24 to 26 in). Males can easily weigh up to 60 kg (around 132 lbs) and the females weigh between 45 and 55 kg (around 99 to 121 lbs). They typically live around 10 and 12 years.

The American Akita typically has short hair, but it is also possible to find American Akitas with long hair. They also have a double coat (undercoat and topcoat) to protect their body from cold and the heat.

When it comes to the breed’s color, the standard allows all colors, including mixed colors. One particularity that the Akita Inu as it that its fur is a darker color like black or brown around the eyes.

The breed is intelligent. They have kept their hunting instincts and they protect their territory. In addition, this breed is independent and stubborn, but it is very loyal to its family. With that being said, if an American Akita does not come to you first, it’s best to leave it alone. They prefer to decide when it’s time to play and cuddle.

When it comes to the American Akita’s health, they are prone to a few diseases, including hip and elbow dysplasia, which is very common in large dogs.
